Helmet or Sword?

Fun warm-up game played in pairs to increase reaction speed and awareness.

How is it done?

This game is played in pairs.  Begin by sitting opposite of each other in seiza. Between the two students there is a foam sword and a plastic toy helmet (a flat soccer pawn can be used if a helmet isn’t available).
  • When the teacher calls out “GO!”, students must choose one of the items in front of them. If the student chooses the sword, they must try to hit the opponent on the head; if they choose the helmet, they must place it on their own head before getting hit.
  • Points can be scored by hitting the other on the head before the helmet is put on and also when the helmet is placed on the head before getting hit.
  • 2 points can be scored by hitting the other’s head with the foam sword and one point is scored by placing the helmet on the head before getting hit. The student that reaches 5 points or more first wins the game.
  • Make sure the sword and helmet alternate positions during the game.

What is it good for?

This game is a fun game which challenges students to develop reaction speed and strategy. The competitive element of this game will increase the stress in choosing a strategy, making this a very enjoyable and funny game. This game is particularly good when used in between the basic Aikido techniques, it helps to release energy and stress and increases the overall fun feeling in Aikido lessons.
